ALACHUA COUNTY, FL – The Florida Highway Patrol said a crash in Alachua County on Sunday afternoon left seven people injured, the Gainesville Sun reports.
State troopers and rescue crews responded to the scene on Interstate 75 at the County Road 241 overpass at about 3:25 p.m.
It was determined that the incident began when the driver of a pickup truck tried to pass an SUV pulling a car trailer in the southbound lanes of I-75. The left side of the pickup hit the right side of the SUV’s trailer, causing the SUV to collide with a tractor-trailer that was parked along the roadway at mile marker 396.
The pickup truck crashed into the back of the tractor-trailer, which then moved forward into a man who had been working on the big rig. Rescuers arrived to extricate people who were trapped inside the vehicles.
One person in the SUV, a 40-year-old woman, was seriously injured. Three other people in the SUV, a 27-year-old man, a 21-year-old woman, and a 1-year-old girl, sustained minor injuries. The driver of the pickup, a 43-year-old Orlando man and his 40-year-old passenger, also suffered minor injuries as did the man who had been working on the tractor-trailer, a 35-year-old Lake Butler resident.
The 37-year-old man driving the tractor-trailer and his passenger, a 24-year-old woman, were not injured in the wreck.
