OCALA, FL – A driver was critically injured when his car struck a pole in Marion County Monday morning, WCJB reported.
The incident shut down the southbound lane of Baseline Road and SE 24th Street as first responders and utility crews responded to the situation.
According to investigators, the driver of an SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed at about 9:15 a.m. when he collided with a concrete pole, causing the pole to fall onto the car.
Ocala Electric Utility crews had to remove active power lines in order for Marion County Fire Rescue crews to reach the motorist, who was pinned inside the vehicle. After he was extricated, the victim was taken to an area hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the crash.
