Damage from Hurricane Helene results in $657M in insurance losses in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Damage from the effects of Hurricane Helene has resulted in an estimated $657 million in insurance losses in Florida so far, according to a WUWF report.

Data from Florida’s Office of Insurance Regulation showed that the losses increased to that total on Tuesday, up from $507 million the previous day.  65,716 claims had been filed as of Tuesday, an increase from 48,341 on Monday.

Over half the claims, 33,130, involved residential property, while others included damage to automobiles and commercial property.

Meanwhile, a report by WTVT said that homeowners are being advised to file their insurance claims as quickly as possible once they can fully account for the damage they have incurred.

The report notes that homeowners insurance covers wind and rain damage but will not cover damage caused by rising water (or surges).  Parts of Florida saw record storm surges from Hurricane Helene.

The National Flood Insurance Program provides federally subsidized coverage for hurricane surge and flood damage.

Homeowners filing claims are advised to use a camera to record as much damage as possible, said FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell, including visible floodwater lines on interior and exterior walls, damaged appliances (with make, model, and serial numbers), furniture, flooring and furniture.
