PASCO COUNTY, FL – A man riding a bicycle was fatally struck by a car in Pasco County Tuesday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

According to WFLA, the incident happened on Wire Road in Zephyrhills where two bicyclists were headed north shortly after 9 p.m.

The FHP said a 17-year-old girl driving a Ford Mustang came up behind them near Otis Allen Road and hit one of the bicycle riders.  The victim, a 24-year-old man from Zephyrhills, was pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital.  The other bicyclist, a 20-year-old Zephyrhills man, was not struck.

The driver, a Dade City resident, was not injured.  She told investigators she did not see the two bicyclists.   There is no bike lane on the portion of Wire Road where the accident happened.

State troopers said neither of the two bicyclists was wearing a helmet at the time.

A bike rider is at significant risk of serious injury if they get into an accident with another vehicle. These injuries not only require medical care, but can severely impact a victim’s ability to work, support their loved ones, and live the life they’re used to.
