MARION COUNTY, FL – The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly wreck that occurred north of Ocala in Marion County on Friday night, the Ocala StarBanner reports.
The FHP and first responders were called to the scene on Interstate 75 south of the exit for County Road 318 at about 5:50 p.m.
An investigation found that the driver of a Ford F-250 pickup truck lost control of the vehicle while heading south in the left lane of I-75. The pickup struck a guardrail and flipped over into the northbound lanes. The Ford then struck a Toyota Camry, and debris from the two vehicles hit a GMC Yukon SUV.
The Ford driver, a 65-year-old Apopka man, died in the crash. Two passengers in the pickup were hospitalized in serious condition at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville. Both are Orlando men, ages 74 and 54. The three were returning to Orlando from work.
The Toyota driver, a 42-year-old woman from Albany, Georgia, and her two daughters, ages 12 and 7, were transported to the same hospital and were all listed in stable condition.
No injuries were reported among the seven occupants of the GMC, all members of a family from Sharpsburg, Georgia.
The accident backed up traffic on southbound I-75 for miles to the exit for State Road 326 during the investigation and cleanup.
