The crash occurred Sunday evening near the Southwest Recreation Center on campus.  Gainesville police said the student was riding her scooter west on Hull Road at about 7:30 p.m.   At the same time, the driver of a Mustang was gong east on Hull Road, tried to make a turn into a parking lot, and crashed into the scooter.

The student, identified as 21-ayear-old Nyla Holland, was pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the Gainesville Police Department.

It was reported that Holland was a sophomore majoring in animal sciences, and also was a recipient of a U.S. Army ROTC Scholarship commission as a U.S. Army officer.

The University of Florida released a statement recognizing Holland and expressing condolences to her family and loved ones. The university assured the community that support services, such as outreach and counseling, were available for those in need.  A candlelight vigil was held in honor of Holland on Monday night.
