This first weekend in December is one of the most popular periods to decorate your home for the holidays, second only to Thanksgiving weekend.

Additionally, it is the time when safety specialists’ shudder at the surge in hospital emergency rooms.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that 160 decorating-related accidents occur every day throughout the holiday season.

Choosing a tree and setting up decorations inside and outside your house might be enjoyable for the whole family, but there is also an added opportunity for injuries to happen.

Every holiday season, more than 5,800 fall injuries are caused by holiday décor mishaps, according to the CDC. A little over 43% of those injuries are the result of ladder falls. According to estimates from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, each year about 18,000 Americans visit the emergency room due to injuries sustained from putting up Christmas decorations.

The leading cause of ladder-related injuries is a ladder sliding out at the base due to an incorrect setup angle.

Here are some tips for ladder safety during the holidays:

  • Use the proper ladder or step stool to reach high places. Do you simply need a step stool to change a lightbulb, or do you need an extension ladder to get on your roof to hang Christmas lights? Selecting the appropriate ladder can reduce your risk for injury.
  • Longer ladders are less stable, so use them only when essential. On the other hand, most injuries occur when you reach farther than your normal reach on the ladder. Therefore, you run a higher danger of falling if you utilize a shorter ladder than necessary.
  • Observe the “Three-Point Rule.” When using a ladder, make sure you always have three points of contact: two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand. To climb, grab the ladder’s rungs rather than the side rails.
  • Do not stand on furniture, like desks, chairs, tables, etc.
  • Due to limited stability, most ladders are not intended to support a person at the top. Instead, store your tools, decorations, and other job-related supplies on the top step or cap.
  • If using a step ladder next to a doorway, make sure to lock or barricade the entrance. To ensure that no one opens the door and knocks you off the ladder, you can also post signs on the door.
  • Aluminum ladders or any other metal ladder can conduct electricity. Therefore, stay away from carrying or handling live wires as they may cause electrocution if they encounter metal.
  • Avoid decorating at night and abstain from alcohol both before and during the decorating process.
  • Make sure that a friend, relative, or neighbor is always at the base of the ladder. They can pass objects up to you so you do not have to carry them up the ladder and assist with anchoring the ladder. In the event of an accident, they can also immediately call for assistance.

During the Christmas season, emergency rooms throughout the country are overflowing with victims of holiday decorating disasters. In the months of November and December, there are an average of 230 decor-related injuries treated by American hospitals every day. So that this season can continue to be joyous, please be cautious! The Atlantic hurricane season of 2023 has come to an end. This season, with 20 named storms, will rank as the fourth busiest since 1950. 2023 saw record-warm Atlantic sea surface temperatures and significant El Niño-influenced activity.

Of the 20 storms that were named during this year’s hurricane season, seven developed into hurricanes. Three became powerful hurricanes.

Just one of the three named storms that made landfall in the United States was a hurricane – Hurricane Idalia. On August 30, the hurricane made landfall near Keaton Beach, Florida, with maximum winds of 125 mph, classified as a Category 3.

Harold and Ophelia were the other two named storms to make landfall in the United States. On August 22, Tropical Storm Harold touched down on Padre Island, Texas, bringing torrential downpours over northern Mexico and South Texas.

On September 23, Tropical Storm Ophelia made landfall close to Emerald Isle, North Carolina, bringing severe winds, a substantial storm surge, and river flooding to eastern North Carolina.

Actual-200x300On September 16, Hurricane Lee became a post-tropical storm before hitting land in Nova Scotia, Canada. It caused severe surf and rip currents to the entire U.S. Atlantic coast, and hurricane-force winds to Maine and the Canadian Maritimes.

A metric called accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) is used to quantify the activity of both individual tropical cyclones and entire seasons of storms. More details about it are available here.

Activity this season has been above average, most likely due to record-warm sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic. This year’s severe El Niño was counterbalanced by the warm water temperatures.

Historically, El Niño conditions have suppressed tropical activity by influencing upper-level winds in the Atlantic basin. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Atlantic basin produced the most named storms in 2023 than any other El Niño-influenced year on record.

The names that were in use in 2023 are listed here. In 2029, this list—aside from any names that are retired—will be utilized again.

  • Tropical Storm Arlene
  • Tropical Storm Bret
  • Tropical Storm Cindy
  • Hurricane Don
  • Tropical Storm Emily
  • Hurricane Franklin
  • Tropical Storm Gert
  • Tropical Storm Harold
  • Hurricane Idalia
  • Tropical Storm Jose
  • Tropical Storm Katia
  • Hurricane Lee
  • Hurricane Margot
  • Hurricane Nigel
  • Tropical Storm Ophelia
  • Tropical Storm Philippe
  • Tropical Storm Rina
  • Tropical Storm Sean
  • Hurricane Tammy

Residents of Florida have always experienced severe disruptions from hurricanes, but in 2023 and the upcoming years, there could be even greater risks. The state is likely to continue to see an increase in storm activity, bigger hurricanes, and persistent winds and rain. It is critical to be equipped to withstand any storm.

Be aware of the possibility of increasingly severe hurricane seasons, and share this information with your local friends and neighbors to develop relationships and remain safe. According to news reports, a lamppost on Main Street USA collapsed last Monday morning Nov. 20 at Disneyland, injuring three park visitors.

The incident, which happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. and left an elderly woman hospitalized with a head injury, was attributed to wind gusts of up to 60 mph at the well-known California theme park in Anaheim, according to reports.

According to Sgt. John McClintock, a spokesman for the Anaheim Fire Department, two more people were harmed from the lamp post falling and received treatment for minor injuries at the scene.

The lamppost, which was situated in a flower bed near the Disneyland flagpole, has served as the stage lighting for parades and other Main Street events.

The incident occurred close to Town Square and the Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln opera house; guests were momentarily directed away from it, but the theme park remained open, according to reports.

People of all ages regrettably sustain injuries at Disneyland and Disney World, as well as other Florida amusement parks, every year, prompting the need for a Florida Disney World and Theme Park Injury Lawyer.

If you or a member of your family has been hurt in an amusement park, there are some factors and details that you should be aware of. You will be in the best position to defend your rights and interests if you have a thorough awareness of these issues.

Even though Disneyland, Disney World, and other amusement parks are constructed with visitors’ pleasure and fun in mind, there may be unforeseen risks. There are several injury types that can occur in an amusement park that visitors should be aware of.

Slip and fall accidents are the most frequent kind of mishap that occurs in amusement parks. Owners and operators of amusement parks are aware of this fact, and it is their general responsibility to take reasonable precautions to keep their guests safe from potential slips, trips, and falls.

Food and drink products that have been contaminated and sold at an amusement park are another potential source of injury. A theme park has a responsibility to ensure that the food and drinks it serves are safe for consumption, just as it does to prevent customers from slipping and falling.

At amusement parks, non-catastrophic ride injuries do happen occasionally.

Some common scenarios include:

  • Cuts, scrapes, and lacerations from broken equipment or poorly set up buildings.
  • Whiplash from being thrown from side to side on certain rides.
  • Head, neck, and back injuries from bumper cars and roller coasters.
  • Broken bones, head injuries, sprains, or bruises from slip and fall accidents or objects falling.
  • Injuries from being pinched by or bumping their heads on ride safety restraints.

A major ride-related incident may cause fatalities or seriously injure people. An injured individual or the family of someone who was killed on a park attraction should be quick to obtain legal help to hold the park responsible for their negligent actions and secure full and fair financial compensation.
