MIAMI, FL – First responders were called to the scene of a collision with injuries in downtown Miami last Friday night.
According to WPLG, the crash took place on Northwest Seventh Street near the intersection with 19th Street, just east of Jackson Memorial Hospital.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are not mentioned in the report. However, police say bystanders rusehd to assist the injured parties.
MIAMI, FL – A woman was hospitalized and a man was taken into custody following a police chase and resulting crash in southwest Miami on Sunday night.
According to a report by Local 10, officers responded to reports of reckless driving in the area of Carver Drive and Lincoln Boulevard. When officers attempted to stop one of the suspects, he took off.
After a brief pursuit, the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a bus near Southwest 120th Street and 117th Avenue.
LUTZ, FL – A multi-vehicle accident on State Road 54 last week left one person dead and several others injured.
According to the Suncoast News, the collision took place west of Heron Cove Drive Wednesday afternoon shortly after 4:30 p.m. The Florida Highway Patrol said a man driving a sedan west on State Road 54 went across the median and hit an SUV headed east. The sedan then struck another eastbound vehicle, a van, and all three vehicles came to rest in the eastbound lanes.
The driver of the sedan, a 53-year-old man from Lutz, died at the scene. The SUV driver, a 52-year-old Land O’Lakes man, was seriously injured. The driver of the van, a 49-year-old Port Richey woman, and two boys ages 11 and 9 riding with her sustained minor injuries.
MIAMI-DADE CO., FL – Major traffic delays were reported following a collision on I-95 in the Hollywood area this morning.
According to a report by Total Traffic Miami, the fire was reported at about 6:24 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the freeway near the exit to Hollywood Boulevard.

MIAMI, FL – A man was killed when he was hit by a vehicle while crossing the street in northwest Miami earlier this month.
According to WPLG, the incident occurred on Wednesday, October 5th near the intersection of Northwest 87th Avenue and Seventh Street.
Troopers with Florida Highway Patrol say the victim, an unidentified Hispanic man, was attempting to cross the street when he was hit by a Toyota. He died at the scene a short time later.
MIAMI, FL – A fiery crash in the Miami Gardens area this morning left three people injured, according to WPLG.
Police say the driver of a Corvette was traveling at a high rate of speed in the 3700 block of NW 213th Street when it slammed into two other vehicles.
The Corvette’s driver was able to get of the vehicle before it caught fire. That individual was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment.
HERNANDO COUNTY, FL – The Florida Highway Patrol said three people were injured, one critically, in a multi-vehicle wreck in the Brooksville area Wednesday morning.
According to the Citrus County Chronicle, the crash happened in the vicinity of U.S. 98 and Lake Lindsey Road at about 7:30 a.m. State troopers said a woman was driving an SUV east on Lake Lindsey Road when she entered the intersection from a stop sign and a flashing red signal.
The vehicle entered into the path of a semitractor-trailer going south on U.S. 98 and the SUV was struck by the semi. The impact caused the SUV to collide with two pickup trucks that were stopped in the left turn lane of U.S. 98. One of the pickups then flipped onto its roof.
THE VILLAGES, FL – A pedestrian accident at a shopping plaza in The Villages last week claimed the life of a 76-year-old woman, the Villages-News reported.
The incident occurred in the parking lot of a gas station at Lake Deaton Plaza on Thursday just before noon. The Florida Highway Patrol said in its accident report that the victim was walking in the parking lot when she was hit by a pickup truck. The woman, a resident of Wildwood, was pronounced dead of her injuries after being taken to an area hospital.
The driver of the pickup, a 58-year-old man from Orlando, told the FHP that he did not see the woman before hitting her with the vehicle.
SUMTER COUNTY, FL – A bicyclist died after being struck by two vehicles in Sumter County Sunday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The accident happened on State Road 471 near Tarrytown, according to the Leesburg-News. The FHP said the bicyclist, a male, was riding south at about 9 p.m. when he was hit by a southbound Chevy Trailblazer. The victim was knocked off the bicycle and struck again, by a Chevy Malibu. The bicycle rider suffered fatal injuries.
The driver of the Trailblazer, an 84-year-old Zephyrhills man, told investigators he did not see the bicyclist prior to the collision. The Malibu was driven by a 49-year-old woman from Leesburg.
The National Transportation Safety Board has issued a recommendation for all new cars in the U.S. to have blood alcohol detection systems that can stop a drunk person who gets behind the wheel from driving.
If the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) chooses to see this through, then the U.S. could see a reduced number of alcohol-related car crashes, which is one of the leading causes of deaths in the country.
The NHTSA said that highway deaths in the U.S. are at crisis level, as nearly 43,000 people were killed last year, resulting in the largest death toll in 16 years.
Early numbers from the first half of 2022 show another rise in fatalities, but from April to June the numbers fell, a trend that authorities hope continues.
If these new blood alcohol detection systems are implemented, then we could see them in new vehicles in as early as three years from now.
While the NTSB has been pushing the NHTSA to implement this new technology and develop a standard so that more lives can be saved, the agency, along with 16 automakers have been co-funding research on the topic since 2008.
The team, named “Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety,” has hired a Swedish company to make further strides in testing a driver’s breath using a sensor (not breathing into a tube) and preventing the car from moving if the driver is found to be impaired.
Another company is working on light technology that would test for a driver’s blood alcohol through their finger.
Estimates show that breath technology advancements could be ready by the end of 2024, and touch technology is slated for 2025/2026. Once the technology is ready, the it will likely take automakers 1-2 years to start adding it into new models.
Even when the technology is ready, it will take years for the estimated 280 million vehicles on U.S. roads to be equipped with these devices.
2020 has the most recent figures available for traffic deaths, and according to the NHTSA, 11,654 people died in DUI-related crashes that year. These numbers roughly reflect a 30% increase in all U.S. traffic deaths, and a 14% increase compared to numbers from 2019.
