HERNANDO COUNTY, FL – Rescue crews were called to the scene of a crash involving a car and a semi-truck on Interstate 75 in Hernando County Wednesday.

According to a report by WTSP, the incident occurred shortly after noon and shut down the northbound lanes of I-75 at mile marker 304.  A semi collided with a car, jackknifed and collided with a guardrail.  The trailer of the truck went sideways as a result of the impact and blocked the northbound lanes.

Only minor injuries were reported, but drivers were advised to expect an extended closure and major delays.  The exit for State Road 50 was recommended as an alternate route.

HERNANDO COUNTY, FL – An accident in Hernando County killed the driver of an all-terrain vehicle on Saturday morning, WFTS reports.

The crash happened in the 3300 block of Saturn Road, where a man was driving a Polaris side-by-side ATV at about 12:44 a.m.  The Florida Highway Patrol said he lost control while going around a curve.  The vehicle went off the roadway, struck a fence and overturned.

The driver, a 36-year-old man from Brooksville, was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.  Three passengers were not injured, the man’s 11-year-old daughter, his 36-year-old girlfriend, and her 10-year-old daughter.

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season came to end on Saturday, but it left behind dozens of deaths and widespread damage across the state of Florida.

There were 18 named storms during the season that began June 1, including three that directly impacted Florida: Hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton.   63 people died as a result of those storms, and the Tampa Bay Business Journal reports they caused estimated losses of $5.3 billion, while bringing 314,000 insurance claims from homeowners and 16,000 by commercial property owners.

Following Hurricane Debby in early August, Hurricane Helene intensified rapidly before making landfall in Taylor County on the Florida coast Sept. 26 as a major Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 140 mp.  It brought catastrophic flooding and widespread wind damage from Florida’s Gulf Coast to the southern Appalachians.

HERNANDO COUNTY, FL – A car accident in Hernando County on Saturday night claimed the life of a 4-year-old girl, state troopers said.

A report by WTVT states that a woman was driving a Kia Optima south on State Road 589 near U.S. 98 when the crash occurred at about 10 p.m.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver lost control of the car and drove off the road, where the vehicle collided with a concrete culvert.  The Kia went airborne, flipped, and ended up on the shoulder of the highway.

LARGO, FL – While Florida residents continue their efforts to recover from the damage caused by Hurricane Milton, the financial costs of the storm are becoming more clear.

WTSP reports details of an assessment by Karen Clark & Company, which estimates that privately insured losses from Hurricane Milton are expected to reach $36 billon.  In terms of the most costly hurricanes on record, the total would rank Milton behind Hurricanes Katrina and Ian, while placing it at about the same level of losses as Hurricane Ida.

So far, the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation estimates combined insured losses from Hurricanes Helene and Milton at over $3 billion.

SIESTA KEY, FL – Hurricane Milton made landfall Wednesday night near Siesta Key south of the Tampa Bay area and proceeded to batter Florida with torrential rain, powerful winds, and tornadoes, WTSP reports.

The storm arrived as a Category 3 hurricane, bringing maximum sustained winds at 120 mph and causing life-threatening storm surge in parts of central and southwest Florida.  The hurricane was moving off from Florida’s east coast into the Atlantic on Thursday morning, but a storm surge warning remained in place for much of the state’s east coast and parts of its west coast.  The worst storm surge was apparently in Sarasota County, where it was 8 to 10 feet

The dangerous hurricane brought more destruction to a region still trying to recover from the effects of Hurricane Helene just two weeks ago.

PASCO COUNTY, FL – Preparations and evacuations continue across much of Florida as powerful Hurricane Milton bears down on the state’s West Coast.

According to the Associated Press, the hurricane was once again upgraded to a Category 5 on Tuesday as it moved across the eastern Gulf of Mexico.  It was expected to reach the west-central coast of Florida Wednesday night somewhere near the Tampa Bay region  Storm surge and hurricane warnings on the state’s west and east coasts remained in effect.

Along with sustained winds of 125 mph, forecasters said the storm could also bring more than a foot of rain to areas north of its eye, and up to 18 inches in some spots. “You’re going to see flooding of homes and businesses, you’re going to see rescues. It will flood in areas that don’t normally flood,” said Mike Brennan, director of the National Hurricane Center. “I’m pleading with you to get out of those storm surge evacuation areas if you have not yet.”

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Damage from the effects of Hurricane Helene has resulted in an estimated $657 million in insurance losses in Florida so far, according to a WUWF report.

Data from Florida’s Office of Insurance Regulation showed that the losses increased to that total on Tuesday, up from $507 million the previous day.  65,716 claims had been filed as of Tuesday, an increase from 48,341 on Monday.

Over half the claims, 33,130, involved residential property, while others included damage to automobiles and commercial property.

HERNANDO COUNTY, FL – People in many parts of Florida are now dealing with the damage and flooding left behind by Hurricane Helene, and the Hernando Sun reported on the impact of the storm in that particular region.

The county was hit hard by the hurricane, with the storm surge reaching 8 feet in the coastal areas.  Authorities made dozens of water rescues, and Hernando County Fire Rescue responded to several fires in the Hernando Beach area after seawater came in contact with lithium batteries used in toys, power tools, and electric vehicles.

Many residents experienced flooded homes, and damage or total loss of their belongings.  Widespread power outages added to the challenges of trying to recover.

CITRUS PARK, NJ – The Florida Highway Patrol said two cars were involved in a deadly collision in Hernando County on Tuesday.

WKMG reported details of the wreck, which occurred on Citrus Way near Kensington Road in Citrus Park.  The FHP’s investigation found that the driver of a Hyundai Elantra was headed north at about 5 p.m. and entered the southbound lane.    The Elantra collided nearly head-on with a Hyundai Accent.

A 47-year-old Weeki Wachee woman who was a passenger in the Accent died after being taken to an area hospital.  The Accent driver, 17-year-old boy from Weeki Wachee, was seriously injured.
